gtm-audit — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Inspects Google Tag Manager web containers for orphan tags, duplicate GA4 tracking, and Consent Mode gaps via Cogny MCP.
npx skills add cognyai/claude-code-marketing-skills --skill gtm-audit -a claude-codeWhat gtm-audit does
Tracking setups rarely break loudly. Instead, problems hide as duplicate GA4 configs counting conversions twice, or tags missing a trigger that sit idle forever. This skill scans Google Tag Manager web containers through its API, flagging paused tags, unassigned variables, and missing conversion labels.
The skill queries the selected workspace via Cogny MCP gateway tools. It checks trigger coverage to see if tags actually fire, inspects Data Layer references, and reviews Consent Mode settings. If connected, it also validates measurement IDs and pixels against live Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, or Segment accounts.
Without a paid Cogny Agent subscription at $9 per month, this skill cannot read any container data. It relies entirely on the HTTP endpoint https://app.cogny.com/mcp defined in .mcp.json, meaning you must authenticate before running audits.
What it helps with
- Detect duplicate GA4 configuration tags that double-count events
- Find orphaned tags with missing firing triggers
- Flag unreferenced variables and missing Data Layer definitions
- Verify conversion IDs and pixels against connected ad platforms
- Inspect tag setup for Consent Mode coverage
Example prompts for the agent
- /gtm-audit
- /gtm-audit tags
- /gtm-audit consent
