What go-mcp-server-generator does

The skill scaffolds a complete Go module for Model Context Protocol: go.mod with github.com/modelcontextprotocol/go-sdk dependency, main.go with a configured server and stdio transport, tools/, resources/, config/ directories, and basic tests. Each tool is defined with structs carrying JSON schema tags; handlers receive typed input and return typed output. The template includes graceful shutdown via context, input validation, configuration from environment variables, and a README with examples.

Inside: a registry for tool registration, wrappers over mcp.AddTool, templates for Tool1Handler and Tool2Handler with ctx.Err() checks and error handling. Requires Go 1.23. If you build Go MCP servers regularly, this cuts out the setup boilerplate. For a one-off experiment, assembling by hand is faster.

What it helps with

  • generate Go MCP server project structure
  • set up typed tool handlers with JSON schema
  • wire up the official Go SDK for MCP
  • write tests for MCP tools
  • configure server via environment variables

Example prompts for the agent

  • Create a Go MCP server called weather-tools
  • Generate a Go MCP project with database query tools
  • Scaffold an MCP server in Go with two file operation tools

## Generation Instructions

When generating a Go MCP server:

1. **Initialize Module**: Create `go.mod` with proper module path
2. **Structure**: Follow the template directory structure
3. **Type Safety**: Use structs with JSON schema tags for all inputs/outputs
4. **Error Handling**: Validate inputs, check context, wrap errors
5. **Documentation**: Add clear descriptions and examples
6. **Testing**: Include at least one test per tool
7. **Configuration**: Use environment variables for config
8. **Logging**: Use structured logging (log/slog)
9. **Graceful Shutdown**: Handle signals properly
10. **Transport**: Default to stdio, document alternatives

## Best Practices

- Keep tools focused and single-purpose
- Use descriptive names for types and functions
- Include JSON schema documentation in struct tags
- Always respect context cancellation
- Return descriptive errors
- Keep main.go minimal, logic in packages
- Write tests for tool handlers
- Document all exported functions
