generate-editor-search-query — Claude Code skill for Unity Search
Turns a plain request to find an asset or scene object into a Unity Search query and opens the search window in the editor.
npx skills add Unity-Technologies/skills --skill generate-editor-search-query -a claude-codeWhat generate-editor-search-query does
Ask the agent to locate materials, prefabs or components and the skill builds one Unity Search string for it. Type filters like t:texture or t:Light cover the common cases; folders go through dir:, asset labels through l:, and dependency questions through ref=. The query is printed in the reply, then the search window opens on its own.
The window is opened by running C# inside the Editor, so the eval command has to exist. That means unity-cli installed, a connected Editor and the com.unity.pipeline package added to the project. The snippet is compiled as a statement block, not a file: no using lines and every type spelled out in full, or it fails to compile.
The skill is read-only. It will not install packages, edit assets, touch scenes or delete results. Say “query only” and you get the string to paste into Unity Search yourself.
What it helps with
- list every material in a project by type
- find which prefabs reference a given texture
- filter assets by label or folder
- open Unity Search with a prepared query
- locate scene objects carrying a certain component
Example prompts for the agent
- Find all materials under
Assets/Art - Which prefabs reference this texture? Query only, don't open Search
- List every script labelled

Questions about generate-editor-search-query
How do I install generate-editor-search-query in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add Unity-Technologies/skills --skill generate-editor-search-query -a claude-code. The skill lands in ~/.claude/skills/generate-editor-search-query/SKILL.md.
What does generate-editor-search-query do?
It translates a natural-language search request into a Unity Search query, shows the query and opens the Editor search window with it.
Why doesn't the search window open?
Opening it needs the eval command: unity-cli installed, a connected Editor and the com.unity.pipeline package in the project. Without eval the skill returns the query text only.
