figma-create-new-file · figma — Claude Code skill: what it does
A skill that tells the agent how to create a Figma Design, FigJam or Slides file with the MCP create_new_file tool, including which plan and editor type to use.
npx skills add figma/mcp-server-guide --skill figma-create-new-file -a claude-codeWhat figma-create-new-file does
The skill is plain instructions the agent reads before it touches a tool. It covers the three arguments create_new_file requires and the one it does not. fileName gets invented if the request came without a name. planKey comes from whatever plan the person picked, or from whoami when nothing was picked. editorType is inferred from the file type being asked for. Several plans in the response? The agent lists them and waits. No plans at all, and creation stops there.
projectId is optional and files the result inside a given project. The file_key the tool returns is what later calls such as use_figma should carry.
Slides need one extra move. A fresh Slides file holds no slides, figma.getSlideGrid() hands back [], so figma.createSlide() has to run before anything reads theme tokens off a slide. Practical catch: this only works with the Figma MCP server connected and authorized, since there is nothing to call otherwise.
What it helps with
- create a new Figma Design file from the chat
- open an empty FigJam board for a planning session
- pick the right plan when the account has several
- drop the file into a specific project with
projectId - get past the empty slide grid in a new Slides file
Example prompts for the agent
- Create a new Figma Design file for the onboarding screens
- Start an empty FigJam board for our retro
- Make a new Slides file called Weekly sync

Questions about figma-create-new-file
How do I install figma-create-new-file in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add figma/mcp-server-guide --skill figma-create-new-file -a claude-code. The skill lands at ~/.claude/skills/figma-create-new-file/SKILL.md.
What does figma-create-new-file do?
It tells the agent how to fill in and call create_new_file: where planKey comes from, which editorType fits, and what to do with the optional projectId.
Does it work without the Figma MCP server?
No. It relies on the create_new_file and whoami tools plus an authorized account, so the server has to be connected first.
