director-readiness-advisor — Claude Code skill: PM-to-Director
An interactive coaching skill for the move from product manager to director: preparing, interviewing, the first months in the role, and recalibrating when things stall.
npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill director-readiness-advisor -a claude-codeWhat director-readiness-advisor does
This skill runs a conversation instead of handing you a checklist. It first asks which stage you are at: getting ready for the jump, sitting in interviews, freshly appointed, or already in the job with something off. Then it asks up to three follow-up questions and returns 3–5 numbered recommendations matched to your answers.
You pick how the session runs: one question at a time, a context dump up front, or a best-guess pass for the most common case — a director a few months in. Underneath sits the Altitude & Horizon model: the shift in scope and time horizon, the waiter-versus-restaurant-owner distinction, four transition zones, and named failure modes such as Hero Syndrome and Allergic to Process. The full model lives in the companion skill at skills/altitude-horizon-framework/SKILL.md, and the dialogue protocol comes from workshop-facilitation.
Expect roughly 10–15 minutes. The session goes better when you state your stage and the friction you feel right away; start it with no arguments and it will ask about the stage itself.
What it helps with
- work out what is missing before going for a director role
- get ready for director-level interviews
- stop grabbing tactical work in the first months
- figure out why executive relationships are not landing
- pick what to develop over the next few months
Example prompts for the agent
- I'm a senior PM interviewing for director roles next quarter — tell me what to work on.
- I just got promoted to director and I still do PM work.
- I've been a director for a while and things with leadership aren't clicking — help me diagnose it.
