What onboarding does

The onboarding skill from anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins produces one document: a pre-start checklist, an hour-by-hour Day 1 table, Week 1 tasks, goals for 30, 60 and 90 days, key contacts, and a tool access table. Invoke it as /onboarding with the new hire's name and role.

Before it writes anything, the skill asks for five things: name, role, team, start date and manager. Have those ready, or the plan stalls. With HRIS, a knowledge base or a calendar connected, it pulls new hire details, links team docs, and creates Day 1 events.

The output ships with lines like sending a welcome email and assigning a buddy, but the actual tools and reading list stay as placeholders you fill in per role. An engineer's plan won't look like a designer's, and the skill says so itself.

What it helps with

  • build a pre-start task list for a new hire
  • lay out Day 1 hour by hour with who's involved
  • assign an onboarding buddy and key contacts
  • set 30/60/90-day goals for a new team member
  • draft the tool access list for a given role

Example prompts for the agent

  • Build an onboarding plan for Ana, she starts March 3 as a backend developer
  • Make a pre-start checklist and Day 1 schedule for a new designer
  • Set 30/60/90-day goals for a new team lead

Questions about onboarding

How do I install onboarding in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins --skill onboarding -a claude-code. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md.

What does the onboarding skill do?

It generates an onboarding plan: pre-start tasks, a Day 1 schedule, Week 1 items, 30/60/90-day goals, key contacts and a tool access table.

What input does it need?

The new hire's name, role, team, start date and manager. If HRIS, a knowledge base or a calendar is connected, some of that fills in automatically.

## If Connectors Available

If **~~HRIS** is connected:
- Pull new hire details and team org chart
- Auto-populate tools access list based on role

If **~~knowledge base** is connected:
- Link to relevant onboarding docs, team wikis, and runbooks
- Pull the team's existing onboarding checklist to customize

If **~~calendar** is connected:
- Create Day 1 calendar events and Week 1 meeting invites automatically

## Tips

1. **Customize for the role** — An engineer's onboarding looks different from a designer's.
2. **Don't overload Day 1** — Focus on setup and relationships. Deep work starts Week 2.
3. **Assign a buddy** — Having a go-to person who isn't their manager makes a huge difference.
