policy-lookup — Claude Code skill: find and explain company policies
Searches and explains company policies in plain language. Answers questions about PTO, remote work, travel, and benefits by connecting to handbooks or knowledge bases.
npx skills add anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins --skill policy-lookup -a claude-codeWhat policy-lookup does
The skill works in two modes. Standalone: paste your handbook and ask a natural question like "how many vacation days do we get?" or "can I work from another country?" — it finds the answer, explains it clearly, quotes the source, and flags exceptions. Connected to a knowledge base or HRIS: the skill searches policy docs automatically and pulls employee-specific data like PTO balance and benefit elections.
Questions work best phrased naturally: "What's our vacation policy?", "How many parental leave days?", "How does travel expense reimbursement work?" The skill covers PTO, benefits, compensation, remote work, travel, conduct, and professional development. If no policy is found, it says so rather than guessing; for legal questions, it recommends talking to HR or legal.
Output is structured: quick one-sentence answer, policy details in plain language, exceptions or edge cases, who to contact, and the source document. Without a knowledge base, it works with the text you provide; with HRIS connected, it retrieves personal employee data.
What it helps with
- find the answer to a PTO, sick leave, parental leave, or sabbatical question
- check whether remote work from a specific country or city is allowed
- understand how to file a trip and which expenses the company covers
- look up benefits, 401k, insurance, and compensation package details
- get policy text without legal jargon or corporate speak
Example prompts for the agent
- What's our remote work policy for someone working from Europe?
- How many vacation days per year and can they roll over?
- How do I get reimbursed for a conference and what's the budget limit?
