Wayfinder — Claude Code MCP server: overview and install

Wayfinder maps AI work into a local project history with branches, failed attempts, and file changes. It currently runs as a desktop app, not as an active MCP server.

What Wayfinder does

Wayfinder groups related sessions by project and lets you inspect how work progressed: the approaches tried, failed branches, and changed files. Details link back to conversations, tool activity, and validation. When a source session includes an edit, the app can replay that file change.

History is stored locally under ~/.wayfinder. The current build has no Wayfinder account, cloud sync, or cloud analysis. Collection currently supports Codex and Claude Code. Wayfinder runs as a standalone app on macOS and Windows; the project says MCP bundles are no longer a current product surface. That means there is no described path for installing Wayfinder as a Claude Code MCP server.

Early-access builds are not store-signed, so read the installation guide before launching one. For confidential projects, review PRIVACY.md as well. Grouping behavior and data formats may change during early access.

What it helps with

  • review AI session history for a project
  • trace failed and successful solution branches
  • open the source session behind a tool action
  • inspect file changes recorded in a session
  • separate unrelated goals within one workspace

Example prompts for the agent

  • Open the Wayfinder map for this project and show its failed branches.
  • Find the Wayfinder session that changed this file.
  • Trace how this project reached its result in Wayfinder.
