VMware Monitor — Claude Code MCP server: setup and use
An MCP server for read-only VMware vCenter and ESXi monitoring through 33 tools. Use it to inspect clusters, VMs, hosts, alarms, and events without state-changing actions.
claude mcp add --env VMWARE_MONITOR_CONFIG=<VMWARE_MONITOR_CONFIG> --transport stdio vmware-monitor -- uvx vmware-monitorWhat VMware Monitor does
VMware Monitor connects Claude Code and other supported IDEs to VMware vCenter/ESXi. It exposes 33 read-only tools for inspecting infrastructure state, tasks, and events. The codebase has no operations for powering off, deleting, creating, reconfiguring, migrating, or managing snapshots.
The server runs through uvx vmware-monitor; setups using an environment variable need a configuration path in VMWARE_MONITOR_CONFIG. Its CLI includes vmware-monitor summary, attention, and investigate for infrastructure checks, while --html writes a self-contained snapshot to local storage.
It writes local configuration and audit logs, and daemon start can post to a configured webhook. For a guarantee that does not depend on the repository checks, use a vCenter account with the built-in Read-Only role.
What it helps with
- inspect VMware cluster health
- find issues across configured vCenters
- investigate a VM or host timeline
- export an offline HTML infrastructure snapshot
Example prompts for the agent
- Check all VMware clusters and rank the issues that need attention.
- Investigate what is happening around the virtual machine
vm-name. - Create an offline HTML snapshot of the current vCenter health.
How to install VMware Monitor
