token-pilot — Claude Code MCP server: code reading and setup

This MCP server lets coding assistants inspect file structure or specific symbols instead of loading large files in full. Useful when code reading fills the conversation context.

What token-pilot does

token-pilot supplies MCP tools for structural code reading: ask for a file outline or retrieve a named symbol. Hooks for Claude Code and Codex can reroute some costly Read, Grep, and Bash calls; Claude Code also gets tp-* subagents. Small files are returned whole.

MCP tools are available in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Gemini CLI. Hooks and subagents have narrower client support: Cursor gets the MCP tools, but not the hooks or tp-* agents. That distinction matters if you expect automatic interception of native tool calls. To add the server to Claude Code, run claude mcp add token-pilot -- npx -y token-pilot, then restart the assistant.

What it helps with

  • inspect a large file without loading it all
  • locate a named symbol in source code
  • review a concise diff after editing
  • reduce context spent on code searches

Example prompts for the agent

  • Use smart_read to outline src/user-service.ts.
  • Find UserService.updateUser with read_symbol.
  • Show the changes to src/user-service.ts using read_diff.
