reddit-mcp-buddy — Claude Code MCP server: Reddit without API keys
An MCP server that lets your AI assistant read Reddit: browse subreddits, search posts, pull comment threads and user profiles. No keys needed for browsing.
claude mcp add reddit-mcp-buddy -- npx -y reddit-mcp-buddyWhat reddit-mcp-buddy does
The server connects over stdio and exposes five tools. browse_subreddit lists posts with hot, new, top, rising and controversial sorting, search_reddit searches all of Reddit or one subreddit with filters for author, time and flair, get_post_details returns a post with its full comment tree, user_analysis collects karma, posts and active subreddits, and reddit_explain covers terms like karma or AMA.
Without credentials, results come from Reddit's public RSS feed: score, num_comments, upvote_ratio and nsfw come back empty, and the include_nsfw filter cannot be applied. Search, comments, user analysis and metrics need free Reddit credentials — register an app at reddit.com/prefs/apps, pick the script type, then set REDDIT_CLIENT_ID and REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET in the environment. Worth doing up front if you want numbers rather than headlines.
It is written in TypeScript and runs through npx, so nothing gets installed globally. There are three access tiers with different request limits; the project's table has the exact numbers. For get_post_details, pass the post ID together with the subreddit — that saves one API call.
What it helps with
- check what a subreddit says about a library or a device
- pull a full comment thread instead of the first few replies
- look up a user's karma and posting history
- find discussions by keyword within a time window
- explain Reddit slang like cake day or ELI5 to the assistant
Example prompts for the agent
- What's trending on r/programming this week?
- Search r/rust for posts from the last month and show comments on the busiest one
- Analyze user spez: karma, posts, active subreddits
