qcad-mcp — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Automates 2D CAD tasks by parsing DXF and DWG files into SVG layouts or 3D STL meshes. Useful for analyzing room dimensions and generating geometry inside AI coding assistants.
Open on GitHubWhat qcad-mcp does
This server connects your development environment to the Python library ezdxf and optional QCAD Pro binaries. Through 12 specialized MCP tools, it extracts layer details, analyzes room dimensions, adds annotations, and extrudes flat blueprints into 3D meshes like STL, OBJ, or GLB.
All project drawings reside in local persistent storage under %LOCALAPPDATA%\qcad-mcp\depot, customizable via QCAD_MCP_DEPOT. The package also spins up a control dashboard on port 11967 alongside a REST interface on port 11966. Workflows run locally.
Core DXF manipulation relies on ezdxf under Python 3.13+, but converting DWG files requires a local QCAD Pro installation. The service can also hand off geometry to blender-mcp and freecad-mcp without forcing companion dependencies.
What it helps with
- convert DXF floor plans into 3D STL meshes
- extract room dimensions and calculate boundary areas
- batch-export CAD drawings into SVG vector graphics
- convert DWG files to DXF using QCAD Pro
Example prompts for the agent
- Extrude the exterior walls in
floorplan.dxfinto an STL mesh with height 3.0 - Analyze the rooms in
office_layout.dxfand list door dimensions - Convert
schematic.dwgto DXF and export the layers to SVG

Questions about qcad-mcp
How do you install and run qcad-mcp in Claude Code?
Initialize repository dependencies with just bootstrap, then start the runtime using start.ps1. The server exposes its API on port 11966 for MCP client connections.
What does qcad-mcp do?
It processes 2D CAD files to calculate floor areas, edit layers, and generate 3D models. The server also serves a web dashboard and REST endpoints for file depot management.
Do you need QCAD Pro to use this server?
No, parsing DXF files and exporting STL meshes runs entirely on the open-source ezdxf engine. You only need QCAD Pro if your workflow demands DWG conversions or ECMAScript execution.
