prompts.chat MCP Server — Claude Code MCP server: guide
Connects community prompt libraries to your AI editor. Lets you query role instructions, populate template variables, and store your own prompts.
claude mcp add --env PROMPTS_API_KEY=<PROMPTS_API_KEY> --env PROMPTS_QUERY=<PROMPTS_QUERY> --transport stdio promptschat-mcp-server -- npx -y @fkadev/prompts.chat-mcpWhat prompts.chat MCP Server does
This server connects your editor to the prompts.chat platform using the Model Context Protocol. It exposes three core tools: search_prompts to filter items by keyword or topic, get_prompt to retrieve text with dynamic variable substitution, and save_prompt to publish new entries. Prompts containing ${variable} syntax get populated automatically before use.
You can run the server locally with npx or point your client directly to https://prompts.chat/api/mcp. Local execution requires Node.js 18.0.0 or higher. You can also scope search results ahead of time by passing custom tags or user handles into the PROMPTS_QUERY environment variable.
Reading public instructions requires no account credentials. However, the save_prompt tool will reject any write attempts without a configured PROMPTS_API_KEY.
What it helps with
- Find specific role-play prompts without leaving your editor
- Retrieve prompt templates and populate dynamic placeholders automatically
- Save tested engineering prompts directly to a personal account
- Filter prompt recommendations by creator handles or domain tags
Example prompts for the agent
- Search prompts.chat for code review guidelines
- Fetch the prompt for a terminal assistant and populate its arguments
- Save my current SQL refactoring instructions to my prompts.chat profile
