Postman MCP Server — Claude Code MCP server: setup
Connect Claude Code to Postman to work with collections, workspaces, and API definitions from your editor. Choose a tool mode based on what you need the agent to access.
claude mcp add postman-mcp-server -e POSTMAN_API_KEY=<POSTMAN_API_KEY> -- npx -y @postman/postman-mcp-serverWhat Postman MCP Server does
The server connects an AI agent to Postman through MCP. Minimal provides core operations for Postman elements; Code adds tools for API context and generating client code from API definitions. Learn searches Postman documentation, while Full exposes all available Postman API tools.
Claude Code can connect to the remote server over HTTP or run the local server with npx. The main remote server supports OAuth without manual API key setup. Local use requires POSTMAN_API_KEY; the EU server also requires a Postman API key because it does not support OAuth.
The remote server cannot reach services on your workstation’s network, so it cannot test local APIs. Use the local server for that task.
What it helps with
- test an API with a Postman collection
- give an agent context from an API definition
- generate client code from an API definition
- edit Postman collections from an editor
Example prompts for the agent
- Test this API with my Postman collection and report the results.
- Find the API definition in Postman and use it as context for this code.
- Generate client code from the API definition in Postman.
