opendata-cat — Claude Code MCP server: Catalan open data
Gives your assistant a catalogue of Catalan open data: dataset search, field metadata and live queries against 15 portals.
claude mcp add --transport http opendata-cat https://opendata.cat/api/mcpWhat opendata-cat does
Eight tools come with the server. search_datasets scans 3,073 datasets, get_dataset_info and list_dataset_fields expose the schema and licence of a set, and query_dataset pulls actual rows from the source portal. That means SoQL on Generalitat, datastore_search on the CKAN sites, GTFS-RT for FGC and Renfe Rodalies trains. No API key, no signup.
The catalogue covers 15 sources. Alongside the Generalitat and the city portals of Barcelona, Reus and Girona sit INE, REE, SEPE and CNMC; Spanish statistics arrive pre-filtered to Catalonia, so population, unemployment and fuel prices are already scoped. A separate search_radioteca tool reaches into the radioteca.cat archive.
You pick local or remote. The local route runs npx -y @opendata.cat/mcp-server, the remote one points at https://opendata.cat/api/mcp with nothing to install. With remote, every query passes through the project's own server; run it locally if the catalogue should stay on your machine.
What it helps with
- find a dataset by topic across Catalan open data portals
- read the fields and licence of a dataset before querying it
- fetch real rows from the Generalitat or Barcelona portals
- cross-check INE figures against municipal AOC data for one municipi
- look up FGC and Renfe Rodalies delays
Example prompts for the agent
- Search for air quality datasets in Barcelona and list their fields
- Run a query on
generalitat:gn9e-3qhrfiltered to the Sau station - Find radioteca.cat episodes about Catalan weather
