NuGet API Inspector — MCP server for Claude Code: real package APIs

Lets your assistant read the actual metadata and public API of NuGet packages. Useful when the version matters or the package sits in a private feed.

What NuGet API Inspector does

Assistants guess method signatures from memory, and guesses cost time. This server connects the model to real packages: it returns metadata, the public API surface of a specific version, version diffs, and the files inside a package.

It runs as a stdio MCP server. The dnx route pulls DimonSmart.NugetMcpServer directly, so no separate dotnet tool install is involved. Where the client machine has no .NET SDK, point it at the Docker image ghcr.io/dimonsmart/nugetmcpserver:latest instead. Private feeds and local package folders go through NUGET_SOURCES, which takes several sources separated by semicolons, or NUGET_CONFIG pointing at an existing NuGet.Config.

With no extra sources configured, a package from your private feed simply won't show up in the answer. Set the source variables before the first query. Registering takes one command in Codex or Claude, and the Codex CLI and IDE extension share that config.

What it helps with

  • verify real method signatures before generating package code
  • diff the public API between two package versions
  • read metadata for a package kept in a private feed
  • browse the contents of a local package folder
  • search NuGet by name and explore the matching API

Example prompts for the agent

  • Ask the NuGet MCP server about Dapper 2.1.66 and list the public extension methods on IDbConnection.
  • Compare the public API of two versions of the package in my local feed C:\NuGet\LocalFeed.
  • Check the real metadata and dependencies of the installed package through NuGet before touching any code.

Questions about NuGet API Inspector

How do I install NuGet API Inspector in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add --transport stdio nuget -- dnx [email protected] --yes. Confirm it with claude mcp list and claude mcp get nuget, then run /mcp inside Claude.

What does NuGet API Inspector do?

It hands the assistant real NuGet package metadata and public APIs, so signatures come from the package instead of the model's memory. It also searches packages and compares versions across nuget.org, private feeds and local folders.

What does it take to reach a private package?

Set NUGET_SOURCES to your URLs or folders separated by semicolons, or set NUGET_CONFIG to the path of your NuGet.Config. On a machine without the .NET SDK, run the Docker image instead of dnx.
