llmkit — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Monitors AI expenses and checks agent budgets. Inspects Claude Code sessions and Cline tasks without sending data to a remote proxy.
claude mcp add --env LLMKIT_API_KEY=<LLMKIT_API_KEY> --env LLMKIT_PROXY_URL=<LLMKIT_PROXY_URL> --transport stdio llmkit -- npx -y @f3d1/llmkit-mcp-serverWhat llmkit does
The server brings AI cost visibility to developer environments. It tracks token usage directly in the workspace. Agents can look up spending metrics before running heavy jobs.
The package bundles 11 tools in total. Five tools run locally to parse stored Claude Code history and Cline task logs straight from your machine. The other six tools reach out to the LLMKit gateway via LLMKIT_API_KEY to retrieve active budget allocations and key statuses.
Cost calculations rely on an offline pricing snapshot rather than real-time provider billing APIs. Registering new LLMKit accounts is paused right now, so gateway features only work if you already own an existing API key.
What it helps with
- inspect costs of local Claude Code sessions
- audit Cline task spend without cloud accounts
- check remaining budget balances before triggering requests
- look up model pricing from the bundled reference catalog
Example prompts for the agent
- Show the total cost of my current Claude Code session.
- Check remaining budget balance using my LLMKit key.
- Compare pricing for Sonnet and GPT-4o from the local catalog.

Questions about llmkit
How to install llmkit in Claude Code?
Run this command in your terminal: claude mcp add llmkit -e LLMKIT_API_KEY=<LLMKIT_API_KEY> -- npx -y @f3d1/llmkit-mcp-server. If you only need offline session tracking, omit the environment variable.
What does the llmkit MCP server do?
It supplies 11 tools for tracking model spend and budget limits. Five tools inspect local assistant history on disk, while six tools query the external gateway.
Does llmkit require an API key?
Not for inspecting local sessions. Claude Code and Cline file readers work completely offline, while gateway tools require an existing key.
