forge — Claude Code MCP server for text embeddings
Connects an agent to Forge tools for turning text into vectors and checking available models. Use it to prepare embeddings for documents or search queries.
claude mcp add forge -e FORGE_API_KEY=<FORGE_API_KEY> -- npx -y @voxell/forge-mcpWhat forge does
The server exposes Forge’s embedding API through MCP. Its embed tool returns vectors for one text or a batch, while list_models reports available models and their dimensions. Set input_type to query for search queries or document for material you plan to index.
You need Node.js 18 or later and a Forge API key in FORGE_API_KEY. Choose turbo, pro, or ultra; dim lets you request smaller vectors. The server does not retain submitted text or returned vectors, though it records token counts for billing. It does not provide search or document storage, so a RAG setup needs separate components.
What it helps with
- generate vectors for documents and search queries
- check available models and their dimensions
- compare two texts using their embeddings
- reduce vector dimensions with
dim
Example prompts for the agent
- Create Forge embeddings for the contents of
docs/guide.md. - Generate a Forge embedding for this search query.
- Show me the Forge models and their dimensions.

Questions about forge
How do I install forge in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add forge -e FORGE_API_KEY=<FORGE_API_KEY> -- npx -y @voxell/forge-mcp. Alternatively, use claude mcp add --env FORGE_API_KEY=<FORGE_API_KEY> --transport stdio forge -- npx -y @voxell/forge-mcp.
What does forge do?
It gives MCP clients access to Forge tools that turn text into vectors and list available models. It does not handle search or store documents.
What does forge need to run?
It requires Node.js 18 or later and a Forge API key supplied through FORGE_API_KEY.
