Cowboy MCP — WordPress MCP server: what it does, how to install
A WordPress plugin that turns any site into an MCP server with 203 tools, per-change undo and an audit log. Free, direct connection, no relay.
Open on GitHubWhat Cowboy MCP does
Cowboy MCP installs on any WordPress 6.2+ site with PHP 8.0+ and gives the agent access to content, Gutenberg blocks, WooCommerce, users, media, menus, plugins, themes, files in wp-content, the database and WP-CLI. Every change is saved in an undo journal with before-state snapshots; plugin and theme updates take a file backup and a database checkpoint automatically.
The client connects directly to the wp-json/cowboy-mcp/v1/endpoint on your site — no relay, no account. Safe mode asks for confirmation before destructive tools run, every write tool supports dry run, credentials can be scoped to read-only or a custom list of tools.
GPL-licensed, all tools are free. Integrations with Yoast, Rank Math, AIOSEO, SEOPress, The Events Calendar, ACF, Elementor, Beaver Builder, SiteOrigin, Wordfence, WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, W3 Total Cache appear only when the respective plugin is active.
What it helps with
- edit WordPress pages through Claude Code or Cursor

- manage WooCommerce products and orders from an agent
- check the audit log of all agent actions on the site
Example prompts for the agent
- Publish the draft post titled New Collection, add an image from the media library and fill the alt text.
- Show the last 10 entries in the undo journal, then roll back change ID 42.
- Create a database checkpoint before updating the theme.
