Connapse — Claude Code MCP server: agent memory and document search
A self-hosted knowledge backend where your agent uploads documents and searches them with hybrid retrieval, so context survives between sessions.
Open on GitHubWhat Connapse does
Connapse stores your files and hands them to the agent over MCP. You can upload into containers, or point it at S3 buckets and local directories you already have. The agent then creates containers, adds files and queries them on its own.
Search combines vector and keyword retrieval. Answers come back with citations to the source file. Alongside MCP there is a REST API and a separate connapse CLI. Everything runs in Docker, so the data stays on your machine.
You need Docker and Docker Compose, plus three environment variables: CONNAPSE_ADMIN_EMAIL, CONNAPSE_ADMIN_PASSWORD and Identity__Jwt__Secret. Skip them and the first start fails. Ollama is optional if you want local embeddings. The app comes up at http://localhost:5001.
What it helps with
- keep agent context across separate sessions
- index a PDF and retrieve an answer from it
- hook an existing S3 bucket up to the agent
- get a reply that cites the original document
- create containers and fill them from inside the chat
Example prompts for the agent
- Create a container called
researchand putdistributed-systems-notes.mdin it - Search

Questions about Connapse
How do I install Connapse in Claude Code?
Bring the server up first with git clone https://github.com/Destrayon/Connapse.git && cd Connapse && docker-compose up -d. Then generate an agent key under Settings → Agent API Keys and register the server: claude mcp add connapse --transport streamable-http http://localhost:5001/mcp --header "X-Agent-Api-Key: YOUR_API_KEY".
What does Connapse do?
It keeps documents in containers and lets the agent search them through MCP. Retrieval is hybrid, and results point back to the source file.
What do I need before starting it?
Docker with Docker Compose and the variables CONNAPSE_ADMIN_EMAIL, CONNAPSE_ADMIN_PASSWORD, Identity__Jwt__Secret. The first launch does not proceed without them.
