agentpack — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install

Keeps task state inside repository files so AI coding agents do not repeat dead ends after context compaction or session resets.

What agentpack does

Context drops wipe out agent investigations. The next session usually repeats the same troubleshooting steps. Agentpack records task objectives, rejected approaches, and checkpoints into .agentpack/ in your repository. Any subsequent session picks up where the last one stopped.

Work centers on a Task Passport. It defines the goal alongside allowed editing boundaries. Notes about source files store file hashes, so Agentpack flags a note as soon as that file changes. The built-in task gate monitors edits, alerting when changes stray outside the designated folders.

Running the tool requires Node.js 20 or higher: without it the CLI cannot start. The server works entirely on your machine without telemetry or cloud calls. Initialization adds local configurations to .git/info/exclude, leaving your repo .gitignore file untouched.

What it helps with

  • retain investigation findings across context compactions
  • resume tasks in new sessions without repeated code analysis
  • restrict agent modifications to specific repository folders
  • spot stale agent conclusions after code modifications

Example prompts for the agent

  • Load the current task context from Agentpack and check the next step
  • Record this failed attempt in Agentpack and create a checkpoint
  • Display the active Task Passport and allowed write boundaries

Questions about agentpack

How to install agentpack in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add agentpack -- npx -y agentpack-cli in your terminal. Ensure that Node.js 20 or higher is installed beforehand.

What does agentpack do?

It keeps active task goals, decisions, and checkpoints in a local .agentpack/ folder. Subsequent sessions read this ledger directly instead of guessing previous progress.

How is Agentpack different from standard agent memory?

Memory systems hold project rules and user habits across sessions. Agentpack tracks the active state of a single task, enforcing write boundaries and logging rejected approaches.
