agent-tool — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
This MCP server packs 40 developer tools into a single binary while guarding indentation styles and file encodings. It handles SSH, process execution, and binary reverse engineering.

Built-in agent editing tools often replace tabs with spaces. They also silently rewrite legacy character sets like Shift-JIS or EUC-KR into UTF-8. The agent-tool server keeps original indentation and encoding intact during edits and patches. Inside, a single binary packages 40 tools, including SSH, SFTP transfers up to 2 GB, and network downloads using DoH.
Reverse engineering tools include disassembly and C decompilation with PDB or DWARF types. To inspect structured configs without full file dumps, the Query tool extracts values from JSON or YAML files via dot paths. Output buffers stay bounded. Responses cap at 32K characters by default, returning pagination cursors for larger payloads.
Predefined profiles prevent context exhaustion. The default core profile drops the schema footprint from 74 KB down to 15 KB, while core-lite exposes five basic tools taking just 6.4 KB. For fixed-binding clients such as Codex, the toolbox gateway loads extra tools on demand. Running without a restricted profile exposes all 40 schemas at once, increasing the baseline prompt context immediately.
What it helps with
- Preserve tab indentation and legacy encodings when modifying source files
- Run remote commands and transfer files over SSH or SFTP
- Disassemble binaries and inspect structures with PDB or DWARF debug types
- Minimize model token consumption using
core-liteand thetoolboxgateway - Extract nested values from JSON or YAML files without reading the entire document
Example prompts for the agent
- Edit legacy_app.c while preserving its EUC-KR encoding and tab indentation.
- Run a command on the remote server through SSH and check its process status.
- Search for the function pattern with Grep within the 32K character output budget.

Questions about agent-tool
How to install agent-tool in Claude Code?
Add the server executable to your client MCP configuration and pass a profile flag such as --profile core-lite to restrict loaded schemas.
Why use the toolbox gateway?
It allows clients with static tool bindings like Codex to inspect and execute tools dynamically without registering all 40 schemas upfront.
How does agent-tool keep context usage low?
The default core profile loads 11 schemas taking 15 KB instead of 74 KB, and text responses default to a 32K character ceiling with pagination cursors.
