Agent Spreadsheet MCP — Claude Code MCP server
Gives coding agents a direct way to inspect and recalculate Excel sheets without relying on desktop office suites.
claude mcp add agent-spreadsheet-mcp -- docker run -i --rm ghcr.io/psu3d0/agent-spreadsheet:0.16.0-fullWhat Agent Spreadsheet MCP does
The server runs on Formualizer, a standalone Rust calculation engine. It evaluates dependency graphs and executes over 400 spreadsheet functions in memory. Because of this, agents do not need Microsoft Excel COM bindings or headless LibreOffice to confirm calculation outputs.
Workbook modifications follow an event-sourced session model with rollback capabilities and dry-run validation. Agents can clone row templates, manage named ranges, and inspect calculation proofs before committing changes to storage.
Legacy .xls and .xlsb files work strictly in read-only discovery mode; saving edits requires .xlsx or .xlsm formats. Running the containerized MCP distribution also requires an active Docker daemon.
What it helps with
- recalculate dependency graphs and formulas in XLSX workbooks
- append rows and clone template bands without breaking layout
- verify calculation diffs before writing changes to disk
- inspect legacy XLS and XLSB files in read-only mode
Example prompts for the agent
- Inspect
budget.xlsx, append the Q3 marketing costs row, and verify that total formulas updated. - Run a dry-run calculation on
forecast.xlsxand show the cell diffs before saving. - Check the named ranges and formula references across sheets in
data_model.xlsx.

Questions about Agent Spreadsheet MCP
How do I install Agent Spreadsheet MCP in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add agent-spreadsheet-mcp -- docker run -i --rm ghcr.io/psu3d0/agent-spreadsheet:0.16.0-full in your terminal. This spins up the server with calculation tools inside Docker.
What does Agent Spreadsheet MCP do?
It provides tools for editing, auditing, and recalculating spreadsheet files directly inside agent sessions. Edits run through a deterministic engine rather than simulated GUI clicks.
Does it require Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice?
No, the built-in Formualizer engine evaluates formulas natively without third-party office suites. LibreOffice is only an optional integration.
