ADR Guard — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Gives coding agents read-only tools to search, validate, and inspect architecture decision records. Helps maintain consistent ADR history and spot architectural drift.
Open on GitHubWhat ADR Guard does
The server gives compatible agents read-only access to Architecture Decision Records (ADRs). It verifies document sections, links, and status values against canonical rules. When indexing runs, it updates docs/adr/README.md only after all validation checks pass. Teams can choose between Minimal and Extended formats or opt into MADR 4.0 structures.
Beyond baseline verification, it inspects architectural drift and tracks code mappings. The system generates diagnostic output as text, JSON, or SARIF files. Running the package requires .NET 10.0. Validation enforces strict formatting rules, so it never evaluates the engineering merit of a design choice.
What it helps with
- validate formatting and status tags of architectural decision records
- detect architectural drift between source code and documentation
- generate a deterministic Markdown index for existing ADR files
- map recorded architectural decisions to code locations
Example prompts for the agent
- Validate all files in the
docs/adrfolder using ADR Guard. - Find architecture decisions that cover our database design.
- Regenerate the index file in
docs/adr/README.mdafter recent changes.

Questions about ADR Guard
How to install ADR Guard for Claude Code?
The server requires the .NET 10.0 runtime. The MCP package is distributed on NuGet as RodriOliveira.AdrGuard.Mcp, while the companion CLI is installed globally via dotnet tool install --global RodriOliveira.AdrGuard.
What does the ADR Guard MCP server do?
It equips coding agents with read-only tools to discover, validate, and analyze architectural decision records. This helps models adhere to documented project decisions during development.
Does ADR Guard evaluate whether an architectural decision is sound?
No, validation checks only deterministic document structure, statuses, and links. It never judges the engineering merit of a decision or replaces human review.
