How Claude Code usage limits work

The pricing page is clear that Claude Code is included in all paid plans and shares usage limits with the rest of Claude. A long day in the chat leaves less room in the terminal.

  • Every plan has limits that reset on a rolling five-hour window.
  • Paid plans add weekly limits on top. Anthropic introduced them on 28 August 2025.
  • For heavy coding sessions you can switch to pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account.

The weekly limits were not popular. The Hacker News thread about them in July 2025 drew 609 points and 705 comments. The reason is plain: an agent in a long session burns far more than a person chatting.

Which plan should you choose?

Our view: Pro is enough to try Claude Code on a real project. If you hit the limit every day and run the agent for hours at a time, look at Max. If your load is spiky (a quiet week, then a crunch), price out pay-as-you-go API through Console, where you pay for what you use with no subscription ceiling.

Teams need Team, with two seat types: Standard and Premium, where Premium gives five times the usage. Enterprise works differently: a cheap seat plus usage billed at API rates, for companies of 20 people or more.

You can also spend less without changing plans. A short CLAUDE.md, skills instead of long rules (a skill costs no context until it is used) and subagents for code search all cut the tokens each request burns.

Claude Code through the API and cloud providers

Besides a subscription, Claude Code works with a Console account (API billing) and through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry, as described in the setup docs. Token prices depend on the model and change more often than plans, so we do not list them here.
