Codex skills, plugins and MCP servers

Everything that installs into Codex: skills, subagents, commands, rules and MCP servers. Each card has an install command and example prompts.

Codex is the OpenAI coding agent for the terminal, IDEs and the cloud; its docs now live on learn.chatgpt.com. Project rules come from AGENTS.md: files are concatenated from the repository root down to the current folder, AGENTS.override.md takes precedence over a regular file, and the default cap is 32 KiB.

Skills go in .agents/skills/ in the project and ~/.agents/skills/. Curated ones install with $skill-installer, and you call a skill with $name or /skills. MCP servers are configured in ~/.codex/config.toml (TOML, not JSON) or added with codex mcp add. Codex also has hooks in hooks.json or [hooks] tables, custom agents as TOML files in .codex/agents/, and plugins, which /plugins opens in the CLI. Custom prompts are deprecated, and so is the openai/skills repository, replaced by openai/plugins.

Step by step: installing Codex skills. Choosing: Claude Code vs Codex.
