Google confirms deploying goto URL redirects to search results links

Google has deployed goto URL redirects as an intermediate layer for some search result links. The move is part of the company's technical response to evolving abuse patterns in organic search traffic.

When a platform operates at Google's scale, every element of the SERP becomes a target for manipulation. Direct links have been exploited for click inflation, URL cloaking, redirect hijacking, automated traffic harvesting and anti-spam bypass attempts. An intermediate redirect layer gives the search engine a control point before the user reaches the destination. Google can validate the click source, filter suspicious patterns and block mass abuse scenarios without waiting for post-click signals.

What it means for SEO and affiliate projects

For white-hat SEO the mechanics stay the same: pages rank, snippets get clicked, traffic flows. But the environment in which Google measures engagement quality has changed. Grey-hat tactics built on intermediate redirects, URL substitution or automated click chains now carry higher detection risk. The search engine has better visibility into the transition path and can isolate artificial patterns faster.

Any anomaly in the redirect chain can trigger closer inspection. That matters for doorway networks, PBN setups, pages with aggressive monetisation and high-risk verticals such as gambling, betting, crypto and nutraceuticals. If a project relies on short domain lifecycles and mass testing, Google will increasingly flag not just the content but the traffic behaviour behind it.

Additional redirect layers affect attribution. SEO teams should watch for CTR discrepancies between Search Console and GA4, unexplained spikes in branded query traffic, and rising shares of bot or suspicious sessions. Optimising the snippet and the position is no longer enough; you also need to understand how Google processes the click before the landing page loads.

Implications for affiliate and iGaming

Affiliate marketing and iGaming rely on tracking chains: cloaking, redirects, trackers, pre-landers, smartlink logic, postbacks and traffic distribution models. If the transition first passes through Google's internal layer and only then hits your tracker, attribution noise increases. The risk grows when mobile traffic dominates, multiple redirect hops are in play, server-side logic swaps offers dynamically, or the GEO has unstable connection speeds. The chain needs to be transparent and short. Fewer redirects mean lower conversion loss and clearer ROI diagnostics.

For casino, betting and fantasy sports properties, Google applies stricter scrutiny to any sign of manipulation. If a site resembles an arbitrage funnel, satellite or intermediary shell, the new redirect control accelerates filtering. Clean architecture, intent-matched landing pages, normal indexation without chaotic transitions, and a stable user journey from SERP to registration form all reduce the likelihood that the algorithm treats the behaviour as artificial.

How to adapt

Cut redirect chains to the minimum viable length. Affiliate setups often route traffic through a tracker, GEO filter, pre-lander, offer redirect and final landing. Every additional hop slows the experience, raises loss probability and complicates diagnosis. Use transparent URL structures: clean hierarchies, conflict-free canonicals, minimal duplicate routes, and stable 301 redirects where genuinely required. Avoid architectures built on hidden transitions, random parameters and endless /click?src=...&subid=...&redirect=... chains.

Monitor traffic anomalies beyond volume. Watch for click spikes without session growth, sudden bounce rate shifts, falling time-on-site despite stable CTR, and mismatches between analytics sources. For arbitrage, the issue is sometimes neither creative nor offer, but transitions cut off before full page load. Projects that look like real products win: useful content before and after monetisation, clear expertise, predictable user paths, and no aggressive cloaking or substitution.

Check redirect chain length, tracking discrepancies between clicks and conversions, URL structure on landing and pre-landing pages, suspicious cloaking schemes, mobile speed for SERP traffic, and behavioural metrics on key entry pages. In this environment, durable infrastructure beats complexity.
