Stake Canada Ltd. has secured a licence from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) and is entering the Alberta market. The platform is set to launch on 12 October 2026 following an operating agreement with Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC).
This marks Stake's first move into the Canadian market. The operator, which has been active since 2017 and positions itself as the world's largest online casino and sportsbook, has previously launched in Italy, Denmark, Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Argentina as part of its push into regulated jurisdictions.
Kris Abbott, country manager of Stake Canada, said the company is 'not here to blend in with the others' and intends to raise the bar by offering Alberta players 'the distinctive Stake experience'. The operator is banking on integration with major sports and entertainment partnerships, work with creators, and content development outside the traditional betting environment.
Alberta recently opened its regulated iGaming market and is seen as a promising territory. The province has an established land-based casino industry, popular 50/50 lotteries, and an audience that is heavily engaged in sports betting. Birgitte Sand, a member of Stake Canada's board of directors, highlighted the company's approach to licensing through 'preparation, responsibility and long-term commitment to compliance'. The Stake Canada platform in Alberta will operate under AGLC standards, including a full set of responsible gaming and player protection measures.
