How to use it

  1. Pick the date in the Date of birth field. The sign appears at once, with no button to press.
  2. The name of the sign and its astrological glyph come up in large type, and under them the dates of that sign.
  3. The chips give the element (fire, earth, air or water), the modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable) and the ruling planet.
  4. The date is remembered in your own browser, so you do not retype it next visit. Copy puts the sign on your clipboard.

How the sign is worked out

What this page gives you is the sun sign — the one people mean when they ask what your sign is. Western tropical astrology cuts the year into twelve periods, and the sign depends on the day and month of birth, never on the year. The tool takes the date, finds the period it falls into, and picks the sign that ends in that month if the day is below the boundary, or the one that begins in it otherwise.

The boundaries here are the conventional dates, but for anyone born on the cusp the changeover can shift by a day from year to year, because the moment the Sun enters a sign is slightly different each time. If your birthday is the first or the last day of a period, keep the neighbouring sign in mind too. The calendar arithmetic runs in the browser, with no request to the server.

Elements and modalities

The signs group into four elements — fire, earth, air and water — and into three modalities: cardinal signs open a season, fixed signs hold its middle, mutable signs close it. Those are the two labels the chips show, along with the ruling planet. This is reference classification, not prediction: the tool matches a date against the conventional boundaries and draws no conclusion about character or fate.

Questions

How do I find my star sign from my date of birth?

Pick the date in the field and the sign appears immediately. Only the day and month count; the year has no effect on the sun sign. The name and glyph show in large type, the dates of the period below, and the element, modality and planet in the chips.

Where does the date I enter go?

Nowhere. Everything is worked out in the browser and nothing reaches the server. The date is kept only in local storage on your own device so you do not have to retype it, and you can change it whenever you like.

What if I was born on the cusp of two signs?

The boundary dates here are the conventional ones, but the moment the Sun crosses between signs shifts slightly from year to year. If you were born on the first or last day of a period, it is worth considering the neighbouring sign and checking an ephemeris for your particular year.

Does the year of birth change the sign?

Not the sun sign — that depends only on the day and month. The year matters for the Chinese zodiac with its animals, but that is a different system and this page does not compute it.

What is the difference between element and modality?

The element (fire, earth, air, water) groups signs by temperament, the modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable) by position in the season. Every sign has one of each, and the combination is unique across the twelve.
