How to use it
- Choose the number of dice, from one to six.
- Press Roll. The dice tumble and settle on their faces.
- With more than one die the large number is the total, and a chip underneath shows the sum written out.
Fairness and the tumble
Each face is drawn before the animation starts, from crypto.getRandomValues with rejection sampling, so all six outcomes are equally likely and one die never influences another. The tumble is for the eye; it changes nothing. If you have reduced motion switched on at the system level, the dice skip the animation and show their faces straight away.
Two dice are not the same as one die doubled. Totals of 7 come up six times more often than totals of 2, because there are six ways to make 7 and only one to make 2. That is the shape behind most board games, and rolling a few dozen times here is a quick way to see it.
Useful when
- The dice from the board game have gone missing.
- A tabletop session needs more dice than anyone brought.
- You want a random number from 1 to 6 without typing bounds.
Questions
How many dice can I roll at once?
Up to six. Pick the count with the buttons next to Roll; the large number then shows the total of all of them.
Are the dice fair?
Yes. Every face is drawn from the browser cryptographic random generator with a uniform distribution, so each of the six has the same chance on every roll.
Can I get a result without the animation?
Turn on reduced motion in your operating system settings and the dice show their faces immediately, with no tumble.
Does it work offline?
Once the page has loaded, yes. Everything happens in the tab and nothing is requested from a server.
