How the countdown is computed
The tool takes the current moment from your device clock and finds the nearest Friday — and if today is Friday, it says so. What is left until then is split into days, hours, minutes and seconds and refreshed once a second, in the browser. The countdown follows your local time, so how long is left until Friday differs a little from one time zone to the next.
The big number is how many full days remain before Friday starts at midnight, while the hours, minutes and seconds on the panel are the remainder of the last, partial day. Late on Thursday the number drops to zero and only hours are left.
Why Friday gets all the attention
Friday closes the working week, which is why it is awaited harder than any other day: Saturday and Sunday come right behind it. The five-day week with two days off in a row only spread over the course of the 20th century — the Soviet Union moved to it as late as 1967 — so the habit of living for Friday is younger than it feels.
One limit matters: the counter measures the calendar Friday, not your own schedule. On shift work or with a floating day off, go by your rota rather than by this countdown. Holiday reshuffles, which occasionally turn a Saturday into a working day, are not taken into account either.
