How to use it

  1. The counter starts on its own and shows how many days, hours, minutes and seconds are left until January 1 of next year by your clock.
  2. The chips give the exact date of New Year with its weekday, and the share of the current year already behind you.
  3. There is nothing to enter: the countdown refreshes every second while the tab is open.

How the countdown is computed

The tool takes the current moment from your device clock and subtracts it from midnight on January 1 of next year. The difference is split into days, hours, minutes and seconds and refreshed once a second, in the browser. The countdown follows your local time, so New Year arrives at different moments for people in different time zones — exactly as it does in life.

When the clock reaches January 1, a short greeting replaces the counter, and the next day the countdown starts over, now towards the following New Year.

How many days there are to spend

From January 1 to December 31 there are 365 days in an ordinary year and 366 in a leap year. So the largest the counter ever reads, right at the start of the year, is 365 or 366 days, and by December it is down to tens and then single digits. The share of the year in the chips says how much of that stretch you have covered.

Questions

How many days are left until New Year?

The exact number is in the counter at the top of the page. It counts days, hours, minutes and seconds to midnight on January 1 of next year by your local time and updates every second.

Which clock does the countdown follow?

Your device clock and your time zone. Someone in Auckland and someone in Los Angeles therefore see different numbers on the same page, because each is counting down to their own midnight on January 1.

Is the countdown computed on the server or in the browser?

Entirely in the browser. JavaScript on the page works out the gap between now and New Year, and nothing is sent to affpapa.org.

What does the share of the year mean?

It is the percentage of time that has passed since January 1 of the current year. Around mid-year it sits near 50%, and by late December it approaches 100%.
