trader-train — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Trains neural network models on market data using the neural-trader CLI. Prepares market forecasts with confidence intervals for specific tickers.
npx skills add ruvnet/ruflo --skill trader-train -a claude-codeWhat trader-train does
The skill automates training LSTM, Transformer, and N-BEATS architectures on market data via neural-trader. The agent verifies the package installation with npm, invokes the command with the mandatory --train flag, and passes the ticker symbol. Results are recorded in memory under the canonical trading-analysis namespace as outlined in ADR-126.
In version 2.8.11 of the library, both neuralTrain and neuralPredict return an upstreamStub: true response. Actual fitting does not take place yet. The skill explicitly notes this placeholder status instead of reporting fake accuracy numbers. It also skips feeding placeholder outputs into SONA training via mcp__plugin_ruflo-core_ruflo__neural_train.
The CLI does not support --model-compare or --horizon flags. The agent reports these missing features directly instead of fabricating benchmark rankings.
What it helps with
- train an LSTM or Transformer model on ticker price history
- generate market predictions with confidence intervals
- store run output under the canonical
trading-analysisnamespace - skip SONA fine-tuning when the underlying library returns a stub
Example prompts for the agent
- Train an lstm model for ticker BTC using trader-train
- Run trader-train with transformer model for AAPL with 50 epochs
- Generate price predictions for ETH with trader-train and nbeats

Questions about trader-train
How to install trader-train in Claude Code?
Run the command npx skills add ruvnet/ruflo --skill trader-train -a claude-code. The skill file will be placed in ~/.claude/skills/trader-train/SKILL.md.
What does trader-train do?
It orchestrates the neural-trader CLI to train price forecasting models and generate predictions with confidence intervals. The skill then saves analysis records to memory via MCP tools.
Why does trader-train report an upstreamStub flag?
In version 2.8.11, the underlying ML engine returns placeholder data rather than fitted weights. The skill highlights this limitation and avoids quoting placeholder metrics as real model accuracy.

Train neural prediction models using neural-trader's ML engine.
Steps:
1. Ensure neural-trader is available:
`npm ls neural-trader 2>/dev/null || npm install --ignore-scripts neural-trader`
2. Train the specified model:
```bash
npx neural-trader --train --model lstm --symbol TICKER --epochs 50
```
`--train` is required; `--model X --symbol T` alone is rejected ("Unknown command"), and `--confidence` and `--decompose` do not exist. In 2.8.11 the result carries `upstreamStub: true` ("neuralTrain returns a placeholder shape (no real LSTM/Transformer fit yet)"). Report that no model was fitted; never describe the output as a trained model or quote its numbers as accuracy.
3. Review training output: loss curves, validation metrics, prediction accuracy
4. Generate predictions with confidence intervals:
```bash
npx neural-trader --predict --model MODEL --symbol TICKER [--gpu]
```
`--horizon` is not supported, and `neuralPredict` is also a placeholder (`upstreamStub: true`) in 2.8.11.
5. Model comparison (`--model-compare`) does not exist in the CLI. Without a real fit there is nothing to compare; say so rather than fabricating a ranking.
6. Store model results (canonical `trading-analysis` namespace per ADR-126 Phase 1 — was previously stored to undeclared `trading-models`):
`mcp__plugin_ruflo-core_ruflo__memory_store({ key: "model-MODEL-TICKER-DATE", value: "TRAINING_RESULTS", namespace: "trading-analysis" })`
7. Train SONA on model outcomes:
`mcp__plugin_ruflo-core_ruflo__neural_train({ modelType: "moe", epochs: 10 })` (`modelType` is required; there is no `patternType`). Skip this step when step 2 returned a stub, so placeholder runs do not train SONA.
