speckit-checklist — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Generates a custom requirements-quality checklist for a feature specification. It helps reviewers catch ambiguous phrasing and missing edge cases before coding starts.
npx skills add dceoy/speckit-agent-skills --skill speckit-checklist -a claude-codeWhat speckit-checklist does
This skill creates checklists designed to test requirements, functioning like unit tests for written specifications. Rather than verifying if an API returns 200 or checking UI clicks, it checks whether requirements define visual states, boundary cases, and edge flows. All generated checkboxes remain unchecked because only human reviewers may mark criteria as satisfied.
Execution starts with pre-checks. It reads .specify/extensions.yml for registered hooks and runs .specify/scripts/bash/check-prerequisites.sh. If .specify/memory/constitution.md exists, its governance principles are applied. The skill can ask up to three clarifying questions to calibrate scope and focus before drafting the final criteria.
The skill strictly requires a spec-kit project layout with a .specify/ folder. Running it in an arbitrary repository without this scaffold and prerequisite bash scripts will fail immediately.
What it helps with
- evaluate requirement completeness and clarity in a spec
- catch unhandled edge cases before starting implementation
- verify consistency of interaction states across features
- prepare domain-specific review questions for peers
Example prompts for the agent
- Generate a checklist for the authentication feature requirements
- /speckit-checklist accessibility and keyboard navigation
- Build a requirements review checklist focusing on API error handling
