search-memory — Claude Code skill: memory search and setup
Search Nowledge Mem memories and earlier conversations for decisions, procedures, and project context. Useful when resuming work or tracing the reasoning behind an old choice.
npx skills add nowledge-co/community --skill search-memory -a claude-codeWhat search-memory does
search-memory looks through Nowledge Mem and previous conversations to recover decisions, their rationale, procedures, and recurring workflow details. Use it when continuing a feature or bug, reviewing a regression, or checking how a similar issue was handled before.
The skill uses Nowledge Mem MCP tools when the host exposes them; otherwise, it runs the nmem CLI. Normal retrieval targets concrete facts, while deep retrieval helps with questions about rationale or connections. After a successful memory search, it displays a focused graph, preferring MCP explore_graph; explore-graph provides a fallback for browser viewing and bounded expansion. That fallback depends on installing explore-graph as well.
Conversation reads are limited to one fetch per question. The skill keeps the configured owner, agent identity, and space rather than switching scope to find more results. Automatic transcript capture and lifecycle hooks belong to a dedicated connector; graph viewing does not require one.
What it helps with
- recover a fix for a similar past bug
- trace the reasoning behind an earlier design choice
- find a procedure used for recurring work
- compare a regression with earlier discussions
Example prompts for the agent
- Find how we fixed a similar bug before and show the matching memory records.
- Look up why we chose this approach for the feature.
- Search earlier conversations for the release procedure and summarize the relevant messages.

Questions about search-memory
How do I install search-memory in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add nowledge-co/community --skill search-memory -a claude-code. The skill file is installed at ~/.claude/skills/search-memory/SKILL.md.
What does search-memory do?
It searches Nowledge Mem and past conversations for project context, decisions, and procedures. After a successful memory search, it presents a graph of the matching records.
Does search-memory need explore-graph?
No, not for inline graph display through MCP explore_graph. The browser fallback and bounded graph expansion use the separate explore-graph skill.
