save-thread — Claude Code skill: resumable handoff, not a transcript
A compatibility skill kept under its old name. In portable setups it writes a short resumable handoff instead of importing the real session.
npx skills add nowledge-co/community --skill save-thread -a claude-codeWhat save-thread does
The skill is marked deprecated and survives only so existing setups keep working. Where a generic Agent Plugins runtime runs it, the honest behavior is a resumable handoff: a skill can nudge prompting, but it has no stable API for reading the host agent's transcript. What you get is a restart point with a summary.
The author flags the trap. Promising lossless thread import while the runtime exposes no session files, no history API and no native importer would leave users thinking the whole session is stored. It isn't, only the summary. Portable environments should reach for save-handoff instead.
Actual session capture needs a dedicated Nowledge connector with a working transcript importer, as in Gemini CLI or Claude. There nmem t save --from <runtime> reads local session files from the client machine and uploads normalized messages to Mem. Otherwise you run nmem --json t create with a title plus Goal, Decisions, Files, Risks and Next fields, and pass -s generic-agent.
What it helps with
- Pin a restart point before the context window closes
- Summarize decisions and touched files instead of a full session
- Avoid passing off a summary as a real transcript import
- Keep an old skill name alive in an existing pipeline
- Move to a native importer where one exists
Example prompts for the agent
- Save a handoff for this task with save-thread and say plainly that it is a summary, not a transcript
- Write a resumable handoff covering goal, decisions, files and next steps
- Tell me whether this runtime supports native session import or only handoff

Questions about save-thread
How do I install save-thread in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add nowledge-co/community --skill save-thread -a claude-code. The skill file then sits at ~/.claude/skills/save-thread/SKILL.md.
What does save-thread do?
It is a deprecated compatibility skill. Inside portable environments it produces a resumable handoff with nmem t create and does not import the actual session transcript.
How is it different from save-handoff?
save-thread is kept for compatibility, and the author points portable Agent Plugins users to save-handoff. Real session capture goes through a native connector such as the ones for Gemini CLI or Claude.
