save-handoff — Claude Code skill: save a resume point
The skill writes a short handoff summary when you ask for a checkpoint. Useful when you pick the task back up in another agent.
npx skills add nowledge-co/community --skill save-handoff -a claude-codeWhat save-handoff does
It fires only on an explicit request: save a handoff, checkpoint this, leave a summary, remember where we are. Nothing is saved on its own, and the skill never nudges you to save — you start it.
Under the hood it calls nmem t create and builds a structured thread with Goal, Decisions, Files, Risks and Next fields. After the write it prints the title, the summary and the thread ID. This is not a transcript import: a full thread transfer is not on the table, since not every runtime offers one. If your tool ships a native Nowledge connector with real thread import, take that instead.
The CLI nmem has to be present. Install the skill with npx skills add for your agent; GitHub Copilot uses gh skill install.
What it helps with
- pin a resume point before switching agents
- collect a five-field summary of the current task
- record decisions made and risks still open
- hand context to a teammate without replaying the whole thread
- recall where you stopped after a break
Example prompts for the agent
- save a handoff for the current task
- checkpoint this, I'll continue in another agent
- leave me a summary: goal, decisions, files, risks, next

Questions about save-handoff
How do I install save-handoff in Claude?
Run npx skills add nowledge-co/community --skill save-handoff -a claude-code. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/save-handoff/SKILL.md.
What does save-handoff do?
It creates a structured progress summary through nmem t create and returns the thread ID. It runs only when you ask for it.
Does it save the whole conversation?
No. It writes a compact handoff with Goal, Decisions, Files, Risks and Next fields rather than importing the thread. Full import needs a native Nowledge connector.
