story-memory — Claude Code skill: durable story state
A skill that keeps canon, facts and context alive across chapters. Useful once a fiction project outgrows a single session.
npx skills add haowjy/creative-writing-skills --skill story-memory -a claude-codeWhat story-memory does
story-memory is a reference skill about long-term memory in fiction writing. It does not draft prose. It tells the agent which facts to keep, what to hand off to the next session, and how to run a wiki and an issue log.
Five resources sit inside. resources/story-context.md covers what context to pass to writers, critics, brainstormers and knowledge agents. resources/fact-extraction.md covers pulling durable facts out of chapters: character state, timeline, reveals, terminology. The other three handle reference pages and vocab, where work and kb artifacts live, and tracking writing issues that carry across chapters.
The skill is marked model-invocable, so the agent can load it on its own when memory work comes up. Solo writers who hold the whole story in their head get little from it. On longer projects with several agents, it is a reason to check whether canon has drifted between files.
What it helps with
- pull character and timeline facts out of a chapter
- hand context to the next agent without losing it
- keep terminology and decisions in one wiki
- lay out work and kb artifacts in predictable folders
- track writing issues that span chapters
Example prompts for the agent
- Extract durable facts from this chapter: character state, timeline, reveals
- Build the handoff context for the next critic using story-memory
- Log this issue and note which chapters it still affects

It gives the agent conventions for durable story state: fact extraction, context handoffs, reference writing, artifact layout and issue tracking.
Who is it for?
Writers running a fiction project with several agents who want canon to stay consistent. Knowledge agents such as kb-lead get the fiction-specific categories and conventions.
