qt-qml — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Enforces QML coding standards during component authoring, refactoring, and code review. Designed for developers building Qt 6 user interfaces.
npx skills add TheQtCompanyRnD/agent-skills --skill qt-qml -a claude-codeWhat qt-qml does
The skill instructs the agent to write compact QML without boilerplate comments or unnecessary nesting. During code reviews, the model evaluates files silently against the checklist and reports only broken rules alongside the relevant line numbers. When issues accumulate, it highlights the five most impactful violations.
Project structure rules keep main.qml strictly as an entry bootstrap file. Separate files are required once a component exceeds three nesting levels or roughly 150–200 lines. For Qt 6, the skill removes version numbers from import statements and omits redundant QtQuick.Window imports. Controls rely on dedicated style imports such as QtQuick.Controls.Basic instead of generic imports when styling properties change.
The skill also checks for the run_qmlPreview MCP tool to enable live reloading. Live preview requires Qt 6.12 or newer. On older versions, preview sessions fail silently. You need to verify PACKAGE_VERSION in CMakeCache.txt before relying on it.
What it helps with
- Audit legacy QML files against modern Qt 6 practices
- Extract nested UI elements from
main.qmlinto separate components - Configure asynchronous loading for heavy dialogs using
Loader - Strip redundant import version numbers across a Qt 6 project
Example prompts for the agent
- Review this QML file and report any style violations with line numbers
- Extract the navigation drawer from main.qml into a dedicated component
- Refactor this dialog to load asynchronously with Loader
