personal-finance-planning — Claude Code skill: setup and features
This skill turns personal money management into a staged plan, covering spending reviews, debt repayment, savings targets, income ideas, and beginner investing.
npx skills add harperreed/dotfiles --skill personal-finance-planning -a claude-codeWhat personal-finance-planning does
The skill guides an agent through a personal finance workflow, starting with the money coming in and going out. Early stages cover budget allocation, unnecessary expenses, recurring charges, and spending habits. Later stages address debt repayment, emergency savings, named savings goals, income opportunities, and investing. The user can skip stages that do not fit their current needs.
Each stage produces a practical deliverable, such as a budget with dollar amounts, a ranked list of spending cuts, subscription cancellation steps, a debt payoff comparison, or a savings tracker. For debt, the skill compares the smallest-balance-first snowball method with the highest-interest-first avalanche method. Investment guidance takes stated risk tolerance into account. Work is intended to proceed in small batches rather than tackling every financial topic in one session.
The agent gathers relevant figures as needed, including income, recent spending, outstanding balances, savings, and target dates. There is no need to collect every detail before starting. The skill provides financial planning frameworks and organizational tools, rather than professional financial services.
What it helps with
- Allocate monthly income across spending categories
- Identify unused subscriptions and recurring charges
- Compare debt repayment methods by timeline and interest cost
- Calculate monthly contributions for savings targets
- Build a staged emergency fund and beginner investment plan
Example prompts for the agent
- Review my spending from last month and build a budget with specific dollar amounts.
- Compare snowball and avalanche repayment for my debts, including payoff dates and total interest.
- Create a savings schedule for buying a house, with monthly contributions and progress milestones.

It contrasts snowball repayment, which targets the smallest balance first, with avalanche repayment, which prioritizes the highest interest rate. The comparison covers payoff timelines and total interest paid.
