openai-platform-api-key — Codex skill: what it does, how to install
Checks for an OpenAI key before API-backed work and guides secure OPENAI_API_KEY setup. Useful when Codex builds or runs an AI tool.
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill openai-platform-api-key -a codexWhat openai-platform-api-key does
This skill runs before Codex builds, runs, tests, debugs, or configures an app, script, CLI, generator, or UI that calls the OpenAI API. It also applies when a request says “using AI” without naming a provider. The skill checks for a usable OPENAI_API_KEY without printing its value, then asks whether to reuse it or create a new key.
When available, setup goes through the secure OpenAI Platform connector. The key is written only to a confirmed local destination, and normal tool output must not contain plaintext credentials. In a Git repository, ignored or untracked env files are preferred. A local helper may also require the repository root through --workspace.
Install it when Codex needs a hard stop before OpenAI API work and the credential choice must be explicit. Skip it for static mockups, documentation, or code that does not call an API.
What it helps with
- check for
OPENAI_API_KEYwithout exposing its value - prepare an OpenAI key for an AI-backed app
- gate a script or CLI before API work
- choose between reusing a key and creating one
Example prompts for the agent
- Build an app that generates text with the OpenAI API, and check credentials first.
- Set up `OPENAI_API_KEY` for this CLI without printing the secret.
- Check whether an existing key can be reused before testing this AI UI.

Questions about openai-platform-api-key
How do I install openai-platform-api-key in Codex?
Run npx skills add openai/plugins --skill openai-platform-api-key. The skill file is placed at .agents/skills/openai-platform-api-key/SKILL.md.
What does openai-platform-api-key do?
It checks for a usable OPENAI_API_KEY before OpenAI API work and asks for a decision about an existing or new key. The key value must stay out of normal tool output.
Can Codex reuse an existing OpenAI key?
Yes. After the check, the skill asks whether to reuse the existing key or create a new one. Finding a usable key does not by itself authorize the next step.
