marketing-principles — Claude Code skill: marketing decisions

A skill that makes your coding agent act as a strategic advisor: it asks three questions about the business, then works the problem through Drucker, Ogilvy, Godin and Munger.

What marketing-principles does

Installed into an agent, this skill rewrites how marketing questions get answered. Before any advice, the agent collects three facts: what you sell and to whom, what stage the business is at, and which decision is actually on the table. A vague answer triggers a follow-up question instead of a recommendation. From there it draws on 15 principles grouped into strategy, creativity and brand, execution, decision quality, and distribution.

Three modes are available. quick applies one or two relevant principles, standard builds a multi-principle analysis with a recommendation, deep adds risk assessment and an implementation roadmap. The default is standard. A lookup table maps problem types — nobody knows we exist, we keep losing to competitors, marketing isn't converting — to the principles and one concrete move. Several principles ship with fill-in-the-blank artifacts, such as a positioning statement or an experiment brief with a decision date.

One guardrail stands out: the agent must be able to name an action for the next 48 hours. If it can't, it asks another clarifying question rather than handing over generic advice. The skill works across Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. Copilot uses a different install path, gh skill install.

What it helps with

  • work through a marketing decision against named principles instead of gut feel
  • write a one-sentence positioning statement and test it on real prospects
  • commit to a single channel instead of spreading across ten
  • list the ways a campaign could fail before spending money on it
  • turn a winning experiment into a repeatable playbook

Example prompts for the agent

  • Walk me through whether we should launch a referral program now, using first principles
  • Help me write the "we are the only ___" statement for our product
  • Run an inversion on our biggest marketing bet this quarter
