deep-research · hkustdial — Claude Code skill: literature survey with verified
Runs a topic investigation in the shape of a survey paper: pins the questions, searches from several angles, checks every reference and answers each question in the final report. Useful before you commit to a topic.

The skill will not start searching until a brief exists: topic, two or three answerable research questions, the angle, and who the report is for. A vague request gets turned into questions first. From there it opens three to five search perspectives, among them the mainstream line of work, its critics, nearby disciplines, methodology and deployment. Each perspective searches broad, then narrows using terms the first pass turned up. If the environment can spawn sub-agents, the perspectives run side by side; otherwise you run them one after another, same method.
Every candidate reference goes through a two-step check, and a paper that cannot be confirmed stays out of the corpus. Findings are then sorted into a MECE taxonomy, and sections are written one at a time, each citing only the works assigned to it. Sources get compared within a sentence. Where studies disagree, the report explains under what conditions, rather than splitting the difference. A self-adversarial pass follows: three retrospective questions plus a check for an omitted perspective.
Six internal gates watch the work — angle, coverage, citation, taxonomy, calibration, weaving. Failing citation or coverage sends you back for a targeted supplement rather than a restart. No retrieval, no run: the skill states that plainly instead of writing a survey from memory. The report follows a paper layout, from abstract and methodology to open problems and references.
What it helps with
- turn a loose topic into answerable research questions
- find the key works on every side, critics included
- drop invented or misquoted references
- group the corpus by theme without gaps or overlaps
- produce a report whose conclusion answers each question
Example prompts for the agent
- Survey the literature on CRISPR in clinical trials and start by defining the questions
- I need a review of what is known about social media and adolescent mental health
- Map the research on this topic and point out where the studies disagree

Questions about deep-research
How do I install deep-research in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add HKUSTDial/Supervisor-Skills --skill deep-research -a claude-code. The skill lands at ~/.claude/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md.
What does deep-research do?
It conducts a survey-grade literature investigation: freezes the research questions, searches from multiple perspectives, verifies citations, and delivers a report with a MECE taxonomy and evidence-first answers.
What does it need to work?
Some way to retrieve scholarly literature — a search tool, web search over scholarly indexes, or shell access to public APIs such as Crossref, Semantic Scholar, arXiv and DBLP. With no retrieval the skill does not run.
