godot-inventory-system — Claude Code skill for Godot inventories
An agent skill that walks through building a Godot inventory: slots, stacks, weight limits, equipment and drag-drop.
npx skills add thedivergentai/Game-Dev-Agentic-Skills --skill godot-inventory-system -a claude-codeWhat godot-inventory-system does
The skill lays out how inventories work in Diablo, Resident Evil and Minecraft, then maps those patterns onto Godot. A scenario table routes you to the right script: slot bags with stacks, a Tetris grid with item footprints, equipment, loot tables, consumables, persistence and item database loading. Each row names its file — inventory_data_resource.gd, grid_inventory_logic.gd, loot_table_resource.gd, inventory_persistence.gd and others.
Items are Resource objects, never nodes. Adding runs in two passes: fill partial stacks first, then empty slots, and only after weight and volume checks. The UI binds once to inventory_updated and reuses existing slot widgets instead of rebuilding the whole list. Saving writes just item_id or resource_path plus the amount.
The skill leans on companion topics such as godot-resource-data-patterns and godot-signal-architecture, so skipping those leaves some decisions dangling. One rule stands out: duplicate a blueprint resource with duplicate(true) for each stack instance, or changing quantity in one slot corrupts every copy of that .tres. That bug tends to surface only once the game is running.
What it helps with
- build a slot-based inventory with item stacks
- fit items into a Tetris grid with footprints
- check weight and volume before adding an item
- wire equipment slots to character stats
- save inventory as ids plus amounts
Example prompts for the agent
- help me design a slot-based inventory with stacks in Godot
- build a Diablo-style Tetris inventory grid
- set up inventory saving with inventory_persistence.gd
