What forex-list does

forex-list is a set of instructions for the agent, not a standalone program. It describes how to ask the Octagon MCP server for a listing of actively traded currency pairs and get back a table of pairs with the reason each one sees activity. The skill covers the three categories — USD majors, crosses without the dollar, emerging-market exotics — plus reference tables on liquidity tiers, spreads and typical daily ranges.

Queries go through the octagon-agent tool with a natural-language prompt, whether you want the full listing or just the most liquid crosses. Octagon MCP has to be configured in your agent first; the skill points at references/mcp-setup.md for that. Without the server in place the tool call has nothing to reach, so check your MCP config before the first prompt.

There is also background material: session hours in UTC for Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York, the overlap windows, drivers for pairs like EUR/USD and USD/JPY, and the commodity links behind AUD/USD, USD/CAD and NZD/USD. Some of it is plain theory on base and quote currency, bid/ask and spreads.

What it helps with

  • get a listing of actively traded currency pairs in one prompt
  • sort pairs into majors, crosses and exotics
  • compare pairs by liquidity and typical spread
  • find pairs sensitive to oil prices
  • plan around trading sessions and their overlaps

Example prompts for the agent

  • Retrieve a full listing of actively traded currency pairs in the global forex market.
  • List the major currency pairs with USD.
  • What are the most liquid cross currency pairs?

# Forex List

Retrieve comprehensive information about actively traded currency pairs in the global forex market using the Octagon MCP server.

## Prerequisites

Ensure Octagon MCP is configured in your AI agent (Cursor, Claude Desktop, Windsurf, etc.). See [references/mcp-setup.md](references/mcp-setup.md) for installation instructions.

## Workflow

### 1. Define Scope

Determine which currency pair categories you want to explore:
- **Majors**: USD paired with major currencies
- **Crosses**: Major currencies without USD
- **Exotics**: Emerging market currencies

### 2. Execute Query via Octagon MCP

Use the `octagon-agent` tool with a natural language prompt:

```
Retrieve a full listing of actively traded currency pairs in the global forex market.
  "toolName": "octagon-agent",
  "arguments": {
    "prompt": "Retrieve a full listing of actively traded currency pairs in the global forex market."
  }
}
```

### 3. Expected Output

The agent returns categorized currency pair information:

| Currency Pair | Description/Reason for Activity |
|---------------|--------------------------------|

| USD/CHF | Swiss Franc safe-haven, U.S. monetary policy |
| CAD/USD | Oil prices, North American economic indicators |
| EUR/CHF | Range-bound markets, Euro-Swiss Franc correlations |
| AUD/NZD | Cross-Pacific trade, commodity-linked volatility |
