business-case-development — Claude Code skill: build a business case
Walks your agent through a business case: quantify benefits and costs, assess risks, and make the ROI argument to leadership.
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill business-case-development -a claude-codeWhat business-case-development does
The skill gives the agent a structure for a business case. The template covers an executive summary, strategic alignment, financial analysis and a risk assessment. Its example lists investment, annual operating cost, payback period, NPV and IRR.
Two reference guides ship with it, one on financial analysis and one on presenting the case. The agent pulls them in when you need the full treatment rather than the skeleton.
It pushes you to tie the case to strategic goals, show several scenarios and stay realistic about timelines and costs. Ask it to justify a purchase with no numbers and no alternatives and you get a thin document — gather cost data and options first.
What it helps with
- justify a budget request to leadership
- work out payback period and NPV for an investment
- compare vendor options and pick one
- lay out the risks of an initiative
- prepare a case for finance review
Example prompts for the agent
- Build a business case for modernizing the customer portal with investment, payback period, NPV and IRR
- Assess risks and alternatives for buying a new system and write it up as a business case
- Draft a leadership presentation for this business case with the financial analysis
