design-testing-strategy — Claude Code skill: pick your test types
A skill that decides which tests an artifact needs: unit, integration, contract, property-based, or none at all.
npx skills add NeoLabHQ/context-engineering-kit --skill design-testing-strategy -a claude-codeWhat design-testing-strategy does
Run this skill before writing tests. It walks your artifact through seven decision gates, Gate 0 to Gate 6, and each gate returns its own yes or no. Gates do not veto each other, so one artifact can end up with unit, integration, contract and property-based tests all switched on.
After the gates you apply skip heuristics to drop types with low return, then fill in the test matrix schema. Field order in that schema matters. Rejected types and deliberate skips go into their own lists. The skill finishes with a markdown list of test cases built from ISTQB techniques and a cross-check against a worked example: a pure function, an HTTP endpoint with a database, or a UI component.
Inside you get the gate table with ON and OFF conditions, a criticality scale from NONE to HIGH, a reference of test types with frameworks, and the worked examples. The skill distills 14 industry sources. When criticality is NONE — docs, formatting, generated code — Gate 0 fires and the selected types list stays empty. That is the point: no tests where they prove nothing.
What it helps with
- pick test types for a module instead of copying a habit
- justify skipping tests where the return is zero
- lay out test cases using ISTQB techniques
- check a test plan against a worked example for a similar artifact
- rank an artifact on a single criticality scale
Example prompts for the agent
- run design-testing-strategy on this module and tell me which test types to turn on
- fill the test matrix for
src/parsers/date.tsusing the skill gates - suggest test cases for the payment endpoint using the skill techniques

Questions about design-testing-strategy
How do I install design-testing-strategy in Claude?
Run npx skills add NeoLabHQ/context-engineering-kit --skill design-testing-strategy -a claude-code. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/design-testing-strategy/SKILL.md.
What does design-testing-strategy do?
It runs an artifact through decision gates and returns the set of test types worth writing, plus test cases and a record of what you skipped.
Which platforms does the skill support?
Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. Each platform has its own install command.
