competitive-research-snapshot — Claude Code skill: install
Builds a cited competitive snapshot with a comparison matrix and decision implications. Use it when positioning, roadmap, or deal work needs evidence.
npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill competitive-research-snapshot -a claude-codeWhat competitive-research-snapshot does
This skill runs competitive research as a workflow: it sets a search plan, selects relevant competitors, gathers only the evidence needed for the stated decision, and labels facts, inferences, and assumptions. The result is a decision-support snapshot with real URL citations, a comparison matrix, and options for what to do next.
Its output follows a stable schema, so later skills can compare a fresh run with an earlier snapshot. It usually covers three or four competitors and records positioning, relevant capabilities, likely strengths, likely weaknesses, and a key source for each one. This is not a market-sizing report or a deep investigation of one company.
Provide a company, product, or segment together with the decision the research should support. Known competitors can be supplied, or the skill can identify them. With no context, it asks up to three questions and proceeds with labeled assumptions. Check those assumptions before acting, because they are part of the evidence boundary.
What it helps with
- ground a positioning change in cited evidence
- compare where competitors are strong or weak
- create a baseline for later competitive diffs
- surface product risks and opportunities
