What backend-to-frontend-handoff-docs does

The skill kicks in once backend API work is done and needs to reach the frontend team. The agent collects context — feature name, endpoints, DTOs, auth rules, edge cases — and writes the document to .claude/docs/ai/<feature-name>/api-handoff.md. Rerun it after feedback and the filename gets an iteration suffix: -v2, -v3, and so on.

Inside is a single markdown block following a template: business context, endpoints with methods and request/response examples, data models, enums, validation rules, business logic and edge cases, integration notes, test scenarios. Each section is filled with concrete data; subsections are dropped only when they genuinely do not apply. Nothing is echoed to chat — the finished text goes into the file instead of the conversation.

There is a shortcut for simple APIs. Plain CRUD without complex business logic does not need the full template; method, path and example JSON are enough. The catch: the skill expects backend code to already exist, because payload examples have to match real API behaviour. Anything unresolved gets flagged explicitly rather than guessed.

What it helps with

  • document endpoints with request and response examples
  • hand frontend the validation rules and enums
  • record backend edge cases and assumptions
  • turn test scenarios into acceptance criteria
  • refresh the doc after feedback with a new version

Example prompts for the agent

  • create a handoff for the cart API
  • document the orders endpoints for the frontend
  • generate api-handoff for the finished profile work
