Code Reviewer — Claude & Claude.ai prompt: code review on demand
A prompt that turns a chat model into an experienced developer who reviews your code and explains every suggestion.
Open on GitHubWhat Code Reviewer does
You paste a code block, a method or a whole file and name the language. Back comes a review: what is off, what could be better, and which alternative approaches exist. The prompt also asks the model to explain the reasoning behind each point instead of dumping a list of complaints.
It runs in a plain Claude or Claude.ai chat, so there is nothing to install. Drop the prompt text at the top of the conversation, then the code and the language name. Keep sending more files into the same thread and the model holds the context.
The prompt carries no review standard of its own and knows nothing about your house rules. If your project has naming conventions or banned constructs, add them to the prompt yourself. Otherwise you get generic language advice rather than notes on your actual codebase.
What it helps with
- review unfamiliar code before merging it into main
- find alternative approaches to a method you already wrote
- get the reasoning behind a suggested change
- check a file written in a language you rarely touch
- clean up code before sending it to a teammate
Example prompts for the agent
- Act as a code reviewer. Here is a Python file — review it and explain each point.
- Review this Go method and suggest alternative approaches with reasoning.
- Look at this TypeScript code: what should change and why?

How do I install Code Reviewer in Claude?
There is nothing to install. Open a new chat, paste the prompt text as your first message, then add the code and the language name.
What does Code Reviewer do?
It reviews the code you send as an experienced developer in that language, giving feedback, suggestions and alternative approaches with the reasoning spelled out.
How is this different from just asking the model to look at my code?
It requires an explanation behind every suggestion, so the answer comes with justification rather than a bare list of edits.
